Programme

The Master of Science in Business Administration is a course of training designed to give students in-depth and specialized knowledge of strategic business management.

The objective of the Master’s training is to provide people with solid strategic management skills, enabling them to design, plan, implement and manage innovative processes, in any sector of activity, in application of detailed strategic plans and in response to concrete market opportunities.

The Master’s course, with major in Innovation Management, will enable students to use the most important innovation management models and tools, with special reference to modern systemic approaches, creativity management, marketing of innovative products, management of intellectual property rights, and technology transfer. The practical work and applied research projects undertaken throughout the course will also equip students with useful practical skills for identifying, promoting and tackling situations involving change with initiative, openness, flexibility and a proactive attitude, so as to develop a strong entrepreneurial spirit.


Target audience

This post-graduate course is designed mainly for highly motivated holders of a first (Bachelor’s) degree in business administration or economics, who achieved outstanding results.

They will be intending to take up senior posts in the economic and organizational management of industrial or service companies, the public administration and major international organizations.

Emphases/Curriculum

The course begins with General Management and Academic Work modules. The students then devote themselves intensively to the specialized field of Innovation Management, acquiring the professional and methodological skills they will require in the workplace, as well as the applications and project management skills needed for running complex business projects. The climax of the course is the Master’s degree thesis, involving practical research based on a task set by the SUPSI or an external agency.

There are 3 Areas:

General Management:
  • Business strategy (advanced)
  • Corporate strategy (basics)
  • Economic/financial analysis for business strategy
  • Strategic marketing
  • Analysis of the domestic and international environment
Major in Innovation Management
  • The economics of innovation (advanced)
  • Innovation strategy
  • Management of an organization and its intellectual capital
  • Management of processes to introduce innovative products/services
  • Entrepreneurship, Enterprise and corporate venturing
  • Management of innovative technological systems (CSM, communication systems)
Academic work and practical projects
  • Theoretical knowledge (principles, epistemology, qualitative and quantitative applied research methods and tools)
  • Research methods and tools as applied to areas of innovation
Prof. Siegfried Alberton, is responsible for the contents of the courses, as well as head of the Business Management Research unit of the Department of Business Management and Social Sciences (Dipartimento Scienze Aziendali e Sociali / DSAS). The course is taught by a highly qualified faculty, in close collaboration with national and international university research institutes, technology transfer centres, and professional and trade associations.

Cost
  • CHF 800/semester (Swiss nationality or civil or fiscal domicile in Switzerland, Liechtenstein or Campione d'Italia)
  • CHF 1,600/semester (not Swiss nationality or civil or fiscal domicile in Switzerland, Liechtenstein or Campione d'Italia)
  • CHF 200/semester to cover administrative expenses
Language

The courses are taught mainly in Italian, but a knowledge of English to B2 level (of the European Language Portfolio) is required.

  • 2 years part-time + Master's thesis

  • Pre-enrolment obligatory by: April 2011
  • Final enrolment: July 2011
We follow a typical Business School programme, with lessons taught in blocks:
  • September – July, from Thursday evening to Saturday morning
  • some weeks, no courses are taught

Organisation

The SUPSI University of Applied Sciences and Arts of Southern Switzerland is one of the eight SUP Universities recognised world-wide.
