Programme

The Master of International Law and Economics (MILE) is the flagship programme of the WTI. The MILE programme uniquely combines perspectives on international law and economics to allow students to pursue in-depth studies on international trade regulation. The programme provides an opportunity to join a select group of young professionals and academics for an intensive year of academic year based on a curriculum that is geared towards interdisciplinary learning on international trade.

Compared to most other Master Programmes, the MILE Programme is more focused, goes more in depth and is taught with a strong applied perspective. We have a small resident faculty but bring in the world’s leading experts from private practice, international organisations and top universities. You will receive indispensable training from a global faculty of specialists in international law and economics. We attract students from all over the world, many of whom have an academic as well as professional background in international trade.

Deputy Managing Director and Director of Studies

The MILE timetable

The MILE programme consists of three terms of instruction (34 weeks) and a three-month period for writing the Master’s thesis.

Instruction starts in the second week of October and ends at the beginning of July of the following year with term breaks in December/January and April. The programme ends with the submission of a short Master’s thesis by the end of September. Each week of instruction consists of 20 hours of work in the classroom with continuous assignments.

The WTI has a distinguished record in assisting students in finding internships in leading international organizations, NGOs, law firms etc. after the third term.

Admission/Entrance requirements

Total fees approx.: CHF 30,000

Selection Process
The WTI accepts up to 50 applicants a year. The principal criterion for admissions is a sound academic and/or professional background in a discipline relating to the MILE program, preferably law, economics or international relations (either undergraduate degree plus some professional experience or completed Master studies or similar). The selection process is non-discriminatory as to country of origin, nationality, gender and age. We shall, however, seek to include students from developing and transitional countries, possibly with scholarships provided by donor organizations. We shall also seek a good mix of different professional and academic backgrounds.

The Application
The application package consists of the application form, two letters of recommendation, academic certificates in English, a curriculum vitae, a Statement of Purpose and a Personal Statement, where applicants should take particular care in outlining and discussing their reasons for wanting to pursue graduate work at the WTI. A personal interview can be part of the evaluation process. Applicants must submit English-language transcripts from each college or university attended showing their academic records as well as degrees earned and the dates these were awarded. A supplement explaining the grading system must accompany the transcript. Current students or recent graduates should submit letters of recommendations from two teachers. Applicants who have completed their degree more than three years ago should submit a letter from a current or former employer. Letters from family members, friends, or persons who are not well acquainted with the applicant should not be submitted.

English Test
It is imperative that applicants can document a sufficient level of English-language proficiency to be able to work and pass exams in English. Students whose first language is not English have to demonstrate proficiency in English by submitting their scores from the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL).

Study in Bern

Berne is situated at the heart of Europe in the Swiss Mittelland. The city of medieval arcades and fountains, on a peninsula surrounded by the green river Aare, is qualified as a UNESCO world heritage city. Once the center of the largest city-state of the northern Alps, it has been hosting the capital of modern Switzerland since 1848. It has a population of about 127’000. Although the working language of the WTI is English, the spoken language in Berne is Swiss German, in particular Berndütsch, and German is the written language.

The Bernese have a reputation for being calm and friendly. As a center of education, Berne attracts many young people, and there is a rich offering of concerts and culture. Berne has the world largest collection of Paul Klee paintings since Klee lived and worked here for many years. Swimming in the river Aare is the Bernese’s favourite summer activity.

The surroundings of Berne are rural. 16km2 of forests around the city centre offer opportunities for walking and recreation. Public Transportation in Switzerland is excellent and you will not need a car when living in Berne. Other Swiss cities as well as hiking and skiing areas are easily reachable by train.

Berne is a good location for reflection and for studies. Remember: This is where Einstein developed his theory of relativity!
