OrganisationThe profile USI has created for itself is of a multilingual institution with a broad international scope. USI stands out for its truly interdisciplinary approach to developing curricula whose quality and relevance are regularly monitored by means of appropriate assessment exercises. In addition, USI hopes to further streamline its teaching programmes by testing them for the appeal exercised by the various Bachelor’s and Master’s curricula on the students, but also by measuring them against the demands of the labour market. There are two circumstances that allow USI to considerably expand and improve the quality and tenor of its teaching. On the one hand, it plays an active part in strategic national programmes within the network of Swiss universities; on the other, it enjoys special relations with top universities in Northern Italy. Clearly acknowledged in the Swiss academic context as representing Italian language and culture, USI decided to invest in this feature by founding an Institute of Italian Studies, and by launching, in parallel, a Master in “Italian Literature and Civilisation”, characterised by an interdisciplinary approach, an element that distinguishes it from the more ordinary departmental models. Sensitive to its role as an academic bridge between two diverse cultural and scientific territories, USI wants to enhance its appeal for student from across the Alps by trying out innovative teaching methods (such as the dual language system), designed to smooth out the difficulties inherent in the language barrier. At present, USI numbers 2852 full-time students altogether representing more than 100 different nationalities, over 700 academic staff and 31 research institutes with around 50 active projects. |

Study in LuganoThe University of Lugano has two campuses, one in Lugano housing the Faculties of Communication Sciences, Economics and Informatics; the other in Mendrisio, less than ten miles south of Lugano, close to the Italian border, which houses the Academy of Architecture. The campuses are a place of learning, of meeting and exchange, where students can not only devote time to study but also meet up and interact with fellow students, colleagues and teachers, build new friendships and take part in extra-curricular activities. In both towns, the campuses have developed around an existing grand neoclassical hospital structure, that after some appropriate refurbishment and adjustment work became ready to accommodate students, teaching staff, classrooms, computer labs, and design ateliers. State-of-the-art buildings have recently been added to improve support for teaching and research. In the restructuring process, architects have managed to achieve a harmonious blend of the old buildings with the new structures within the fabric of the city, resulting in an original contrast between modern and neoclassical design. The precincts, classrooms, design ateliers, dedicated study spaces, and facilities offer an overall seating capacity for more than two thousand students. The computer rooms are open round the clock and offer hundreds of PC workstations for teaching purposes and for individual study. Spacious facilities are a distinctive feature of USI’s philosophy, which aims to provide its students with an education and training abreast of the times. |
